Music Program Overview

Under the directorship of Susan Rogers DeSelms, our music ministry features 4 choral groups, a handbell choir, and a tower bell lay ministry group. Over thirty percent of the congregation participates in one or more of the musical groups of the United Parish. Each of our denominations brings its own musical heritage, while the building itself, with its 1930's era E.M. Skinner Organ, provides the added allure of having been the parish home of celebrated organist E. Power Biggs from 1935-1956.

The United Parish has commissioned Kareem Roustom to compose a piece based on Kahlil Gibran’s lesser known, but stunningly brilliant Jesus the Son of Man. Jesus, the Son of Man is a collection of essays written in the voice of various individuals that knew or know Jesus – from Mary Magdalen to the mother of Judas. The primier is scheduled for Easter 2010.
You will want to drink in every chapter of this amazing volume that we will be studying as a church all through the season of Lent. The various movements of the piece will occur during the Easter prelude and service proper. Roustom received his musical training in Syria and America, and while making his living as a film composer, is receiving many commissions for concert music as well. He recently won best film score for Encounter Point at the Bend Film Festival. Kareem has a unique understanding of drama, and of how to create drama in music. There is no doubt in my mind that this music – based on this text- has been waiting for just the right moment to come into being. We will not just witness the birth, but take part in the creation! The chancel choir made the first contribution of $450 toward this $4500 commission. The entire United Parish family will have the opportunity to contribute in the coming months – please watch your newsletter for more details.
